Here are printable materials and some
suggestions to present letter I (long i sound). The presentation
ideally should be part of a homes
and house theme or polar theme
(Arctic) activities and/or crafts.
Social studies > What is an igloo? A snowhouse
Ask children what they think is an igloo. Discuss
some basic facts and show some images. Look and compare to
other types of dwellings.

Present and display poster, and distribute your option of printable
materials listed in the materials column.
Explain that the word igloo exhibits the short i sound.
Examples: igloo, iguana, and ink
Alphabet Letter I Igloo coloring
page for early Pre-K or first letter K presentation and extended
handwriting practice worksheet for reinforcement and advanced
Pre-K-K.
*Finger and Pencil Tracing:
*Trace letter I's in upper and lower case with your finger as you also sound out the
letter. Invite the children to do the same on your choice of coloring
page or handwriting practice worksheet. Encourage the children to trace the dotted letter
with your choice of sharpened crayon, fine tip marker, coloring or regular pencil
and explain the direction of the arrows and numbers (on the
upper right corner) that help them trace the
letter correctly. During the demonstration, you may want
to count out loud as you trace so children become aware of how the
number order aids them in the writing process.
*Find the letter I's: Have the children find all the
letter I's in upper and lower case on the page and encourage them to circle
or trace/shade them first. Visit each child to make sure they
have identified the letter I's and then discuss the locations with the poster.
*Coloring or Painting Activity:
Encourage the children to color the igloo scene.
Letter I words (hard g sound): Letter
I Activity Page and Mini Book. This worksheet and matching mini
book can be used as part of Letter I program of activities
to reinforce letter practice and to identify related I words. Read suggested instructions for using the worksheet
and mini-book.
Discuss other letter I words and images (refer to letter activity
worksheet above): First 'brainstorm' and
ask the children about other words that have that beginning sound and
write them on a board (dry erase board) as the children come up with
examples. You can print letter I in a different bright color to
make it stand out. If you have illustrated alphabet books you
can also use images in them. You can also display letter I posters and
coloring pages or make a letter I classroom book. For
related images visit: Letter
I Printable Materials.
Coloring Activity: Encourage
the children to color the image in the coloring page or
worksheet.
