Activity #1: Letter Pp is for Pumpkin Activities
Visit this related set of activities to present P is for Pumpkin and
other learning activities to incorporate with this or as a separate activity.
Peter, Peter the Pumpkin-Eater is a popular
nursery rhyme that is effective to practice letter P (Peter &
pumpkin), focus on an pumpkin and autumn harvest theme, or an alternative for
Halloween celebrations.
Activity #2: The Pumpkin Eater Nursery Rhyme
Note: Prior to presenting the nursery rhyme, make one color
version of the craft to use during the reading. This can
generate enthusiasm and motivation for the children to later make
their own.
* Read and/or sing using the the nursery rhyme
poster and craft. Make sure
child understands the meaning of all the words. Identify
colors an images in the picture.
* Discuss the rhyme in terms of what is real and fantasy. Ask
the children what they think about Peter's wife inside the pumpkin
shell. Is it possible to live inside a pumpkin?
*Find all the letter P's in the rhyme text - have children
circle all the letter P's in the coloring
page version.
*Proceed to do the craft and use again to read and dramatize the
nursery rhyme.
Note:
Children under 2 will benefit greatly from singing, using puppets,
stuffed animals, and/or finger plays with nursery rhymes.

Activity #2: The Pumpkin Eater Craft
This is a fun craft, but it does require some adult assistance to
complete. It is a pumpkin with an image of Peter on the
pumpkin. Peter's wife is a craft stick puppet that slides
through an opening in the pumpkin to mimic her living inside.
I chose fun images of two young pilgrims to tie to a Thanksgiving
theme.
Print your choice of color or black line format templates to color
and decorate. Ideally, print on sturdy paper, card stock or
glue paper version to thin card board. Template #2
has detailed instructions and illustrations to assemble the
craft.
Use the craft to read, dramatize and reinforce the rhyme.
Color Practice: Make sure to identify colors and shapes
associated with the craft -- the pumpkin is a circle and has orange
shades. Peter and his wife, who represent Pilgrims, are
dressed in blue and white attire.
