Activities: Chicken Craft or Hen Craft
The chicken or hen is a animal to introduce for various themes listed in the theme column. Visit the chick | chicken | hen section, farm animals or bird section for various related learning activities that tie in with the craft activities below.
The children will have fun making an easy and fun craft of a chicken or a hen entirely assembled with basic shapes and during the process many skills can be addressed. The main body and head are an egg shape (a sort of oval). This emphasizes that birds hatch from eggs and invites discussion about the spring season and/or Easter festivities. Many other printable support materials and links to related activities are provided. Let's get started.
Activity: Easy Shapes Chicken or Hen Craft Ages 2.5+ Greeting Card Option below
Tell the children they are going to have fun with activities related to the chicken or hen and learn about birds.
Review your options for printing the craft that best meet your needs. Before assembly conduct some of the learning activities suggested below:
Printing and assembly options for the craft:
Option 1: Print craft color template, cut out, conduct learning activities below and assemble.
Option 2: Print black and white template. See greeting card option below. Children can color, paint or decorate first, cut out and proceed as above.
Option 3: For large groups or to recycle left over materials.
Print black & white template on card stock and use as a master template. Trace the patterns directly on construction paper, left-over paper such as wrapping paper or wallpaper, fun foam, to obtain pieces needed in coordinating colors. View greeting card option below.
Other decorations and ideas for the craft option:
1. Greeting Card Option - Follow this diagram to create a greeting card with the egg template first. Proceed to assemble the rest of the pieces with the folded egg card.
1. Use wiggly eyes over the printed eyes.
1. Ask children to identify the shapes and colors on the
template if using the color template. Ask the children to
identify the colors they've used to color/decorate the template.
*Glue or glue stick
