Poinsettia Fan Craft and Printable Activities
Materials:
- printer
- paper or card stock to print the template
- coloring tools for B&W template
- scissors
- glue or glue stick
- large craft stick
Celebrate the holiday season by introducing children to the poinsettia, the most popular flowering plant of winter! This printable fan craft provides a fun, hands-on activity for educators and parents to engage kids in learning about the history and science behind this festive symbol of Christmas.
These fun and educational activities are appropriate for preschool and elementary grades.
Instructions:
Printing options:
Option 1: Print the fan color template, and petal templates with instructions, cut six red petals of each size.
Option 2: Print fan black & white template directly on your choice of background color on sturdy construction or card stock preferably. Print instructions & petal templates, cut six red petals of each size.
Learning activities:
Number skills: Count one through six. View the numerals and paste the petals in numerical and clockwise position.
Color skills: The main colors to identify and practice here are red, yellow and green.
Assembly:
- Color the flower center dots yellow.
- Glue the six larger petals in the designated petal areas with a numeral only in clockwise direction.
- Glue the six smaller petals in the designated petal areas with a numeral within a circle in clockwise direction.
- Attach and secure a large craft stick with glue and tape to hold the fan.
- Optional: Write letter Pp poinsettia behind the fan, and the crafter's name.

More ideas for the craft:
- The petal areas can be filled with sequins, beads, and other similar craft materials, instead of a cut-out petal.
- The craft stick can be painted and also embellished with a ribbon. Add a pretty bow and long streams of ribbon to the handle.
- Use a hole punch along the border of the fan. Start lacing from the handle and end by making a bow with red ribbon or yarn.
