Flower Craft · Parts of a Plant and Printable Activities
Materials:
- printer
- paper or card stock to print the template
- paper or construction paper in contrasting color for the background
- coloring tools for B&W template
- scissors
- glue or glue stick
- Optional: one or more potted flowering plants, seeds
Bring science to life with a blooming good time! This engaging flower paper craft offers a vibrant, hands-on way for kids to explore the basic parts of a plant and understand its fascinating growth stages.
These fun and educational activities are appropriate for toddlers, preschool and elementary grades.
Printing Options:
Color option: Ideal for toddlers to concentrate on assembly and identifying colors.
Black & White: This option is best for all ages, to color, paint, decorate and scissor cutting practice.
Instructions:
Assembly and learning activities: (after template is cutout and decorated)
Discuss the colors in the color template, but indicate that the flower can be colored with any favorite colors. the stem and leaves should be green and the soil brown. Count the templates out loud.
Discuss and point to the parts of the plant: the flower, the petals, the stem, the leaves, the roots in the soil. You can expand on plant growth later while watching a short children's video, reading a picture book and a coloring page presentation.
Assembly:
- Allow the children to play with the pieces and assemble them without glue, and point to the small picture found on the template for guidance.
- Apply glue to one end of the stem, center and slide under the top of the pot, press in place.
- Apply glue to the lower part of the stem, position the two leaves in place, press in place.
- Apply glue to the top of the stem, center and position the flower, press in place.
- Turn the craft over, apply glue to the borders and glue centered (closer to the lower edge if writing a title) of a piece of craft or construction paper in a complementary color, such as blue.
- Optional: Write F f flower at the top of the page.
