The Frog Prince

The Frog Prince - a Retelling of the Grimm Brothers Fairty Tale

Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful young Princess who loved to play in the sunny garden near her castle. She had a favorite toy: a shiny golden ball. One day, while playing near a deep, dark well, the Princess accidentally tossed her ball too high. Splash! The golden ball fell right into the water! The Princess started to cry.

Suddenly, a little Frog popped his head out of the water! "Don't cry, Princess," he croaked. "I can get your ball, but only if you promise to be my friend, let me eat from your plate, and sleep on your soft bed." The Princess thought the Frog was silly, but she wanted her ball back. "I promise!" she said quickly. The Frog dove down and came back with the golden ball.

The Princess quickly ran back to the castle and forgot all about her promise. But that evening, just as the King and Queen and the Princess were sitting down for a grand dinner, they heard a little *tap-tap-tap* at the door. It was the little Frog! He hopped right into the dining hall and jumped onto the grand table. The Princess looked very surprised and a little bit displeased as the Frog hopped right up to her plate! The King reminded the Princess, "A promise is a promise, my daughter." The Princess frowned but had to let the Frog eat next to her.

Later that night, the Princess was sitting sadly on her bed. The Frog hopped up and asked to sleep on her soft, silken pillow. The Princess felt a wave of disgust! "Get off my pillow, you slimy frog!" she cried, pointing firmly towards the floor. "You can't sleep there!" As the Princess's strong words echoed, there was a flash of sparkling light and smoke! When she opened her eyes, the Frog was gone, and standing before her was a handsome young Prince! He told the Princess that a wicked witch had turned him into a frog, and only a princess who was kind enough to keep her promise could break the spell. The Princess was amazed and very happy that the spell was finally broken!

The Prince and Princess became best friends and partners. The next day, a beautiful carriage pulled by two strong horses arrived at the castle. The Prince and Princess waved goodbye to the King and Queen and rode off together to the Prince's own kingdom, where they planned to live happily ever after.
