ABOUT HERONS, EGRETS AND BITTERNS:
  1. Long-legged Waders! Herons are cool, tall birds with long legs that wade through water like living stilts. They patiently wait for a yummy fish to swim by, then snatch it up with their pointy beaks! They can also eat frogs, salamanders, turtles, snakes, insects, rodents and birds.
  2. Salty or Freshwater? Herons Can Do Both! These adaptable birds can be found on coasts, beaches, and even freshwater marshes. No matter the water, they're always on the lookout for a tasty treat.
  3. Spot the Difference: Egrets and Bitterns! Herons have some close cousins called egrets and bitterns. Egrets are usually a bit smaller and have beautiful white feathers, and some have decorative feathers. Bitterns are shorter-necked, more shy and like to hide in reeds. They all fly with their necks retracted.
  4. Fishing Friends: Patient and Precise! Herons are super patient hunters. They stand very still for a long time, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Then, with a lightning-fast lightning jab, they grab their lunch!
