Okapi: The Jungle Zebra-Giraffe Mystery!
  • Rainforest Mystery! Okapis live in the dense rainforests of the Ituri Rainforest in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa, and for a long time, people didn't even know they existed! They are shy and like to hide.
  • Part Zebra, Part Giraffe! Look at their legs! They have stripes like a zebra, but they are actually the closest living relative to the tall giraffe! Isn't that surprising?
  • Long, Licky Tongue (Again!) Just like their giraffe cousins, okapis have very long, dark-colored tongues. They use them to reach tasty leaves and even to clean their own ears!
  • Quiet Giants! Even though they are big animals, okapis are mostly quiet. Mothers and their babies make soft sounds to talk to each other in the dense forest.
  • Endangered and Need Our Help! Sadly, because their rainforest home is being lost and they are sometimes hunted, okapis are endangered. This means we need to work hard to protect them so they don't disappear forever.
