Rhinoceros Rumbles: Awesome Facts About Our Big, Bumpy Friends!
  • A group of rhinos is called a crash! Imagine a crash of rhinos running across a field—it would be a very loud and exciting sight!
  • Their horns are made of hair! Rhino horns are not bone; they're made of keratin, the same stuff your fingernails and hair are made of. This means their horns can be trimmed without hurting them.
  • They are super fast! Even though they are very big, rhinos can run really fast—some can run up to 30 to 40 miles per hour, which is faster than most people can drive in a neighborhood!
  • Rhinos talk with their poo! Rhinos have a strong sense of smell and they use their "toilets" (called middens) to leave messages for other rhinos. The smell can tell them who's been in the area.
  • Not all rhinos have two horns! While most African rhinos have two horns, the Indian and Javan rhinos have only one.
  • Why are rhinos in trouble? Rhinos are endangered because people illegally hunt them for their horns. These poachers want the horns to sell for a lot of money because some people mistakenly believe they have special medicinal powers. Sadly, a rhino's horn has no special healing power at all.
