The spider is not an insect. Insects have 6 legs. A spider is a small animal with eight legs and a body made up of two parts. Most spiders spin webs in which they nest and catch insects to eat. Spiders are related to mites, ticks and scorpions.

Children Age 3 and under:
- Print a
letter S coloring page D'Nealian or Standard
Block font and select and print a spider coloring page
behind it or on a separate page if using paints to
decorate later. Discuss other letter S words found on the worksheet.
- Finger Tracing: Trace letter S's in upper and lower case with your finger as you also sound out the
letter. Invite the children to do the same on their coloring
- Children can trace and color the letter S's. After completing coloring the letter, encourage children to color the spider image. Write the word spider on the finished coloring page.
Ages 3+ to 6 -
beginning letter S:

Display letter S posters and coloring pages or assemble a letter S classroom book with letter S printable activities.
Finger and Pencil Tracing: Trace the letter S's with your finger in upper and lower case as you also sound out the
letter. Invite the children to do the same on their coloring page.
Encourage the children to trace the dotted letter, and demonstrate the direction of the arrows and to pay attention to the numbers that helps them trace the letter correctly. During the demonstration, you may want to count out loud and as you trace so children become aware of how the number order aids them in the process.
Find the letter S's: Have the children find all the letter S's in upper and lower case on the page and encourage them to circle or trace/shade them.
Coloring activity: Encourage the children to color the spider image with a variety of materials.
Maze > Spider and web > Skills > Prewriting skills, problem solving, letter tracing, numerals 1 - 8 > count the legs on the spider. The maze is for children ages three to five that are just starting to learn letters and initial writing.
