Deer - The Antlered Avengers:
  • Size Spectrum: The deer family (Cervidae) is incredibly diverse, ranging from the tiny Southern Pudu, which is about the size of a house cat, to the massive moose, which can stand 7 feet tall at the shoulder.
  • Antler Alchemy: Unlike horns, which are permanent, deer antlers are the fastest-growing living tissue on the planet! Elk (wapiti) can grow their massive racks at a rate of up to an inch per day during the summer.
  • The Reindeer Perk: While most male deer grow antlers to show off, reindeer (also known as caribou) are the only species where the females grow antlers too, giving them a bit of extra "girl power" during the winter months.
  • Super Sensors: Deer are built for survival; their eyes are positioned on the sides of their heads, giving them a 310-degree view of the world, making it nearly impossible to sneak up on them.
  • Clicking Knees: When reindeer walk, their tendons make a distinct clicking sound. This helps the herd stay together during blinding snowstorms when they can't see each other!
  • Dietary Daredevils: While most deer stick to grass and shrubs, the moose is a semi-aquatic snacker. They can dive up to 20 feet underwater to munch on sodium-rich pond weeds.
