REINDEER or CARIBOU: Fun Facts About the Kings of the Snow:
- Chameleon Eyes: Their eyes turn blue in the winter to help them see in the dark and gold in the summer!
- Built-in Snowshoes: Their hooves expand when the ground is soft and shrink when it's frozen to help them walk on snow.
- Click-Clack: When they walk, their tendons make a "clicking" sound so they can find each other in a blizzard.
- Girl Power: Reindeer are the only deer species where both the males and the females grow antlers.
- Fast Travelers: A baby reindeer can run faster than an Olympic sprinter just a few hours after being born!
- Same Animal, Different Name! They are actually the exact same animal! In North America, we call them caribou when they are wild and roaming the big open tundra. But in Europe and Asia (and whenever they are helping pull a sleigh!), they are called reindeer.
