The Fox and the Crow

Present or print PDF - Aesop's Fable: The Fox and the Leopard

One sunny morning, a clever fox was walking through the forest, sniffing for something tasty to eat. Suddenly, he spotted a crow sitting high up in a tree. She wasn’t just sitting—she had a big, yummy piece of cheese in her beak! The fox’s tummy rumbled. “Ooh,” he thought, “That cheese would make a perfect breakfast!”

He walked right under the tree and looked up with a big smile. “Good morning, beautiful bird!” he said sweetly. The crow looked down, unsure. She didn’t say a word. She just held on tight to her cheese. But the fox didn’t give up. “Wow,” he said, “Your feathers are so shiny! And your wings—so strong and graceful! You must be the most wonderful bird in the forest. I bet your singing is just as lovely. If you sang one song, I’d call you the Queen of Birds!”

The crow felt proud. She wanted to be Queen of Birds! So she opened her beak to sing her loudest “CAW!” But—uh-oh! The cheese fell right out of her mouth… and the fox caught it! “Thank you!” said the fox, licking his lips. “You do have a voice… but you forgot to be wise!” And off he went, leaving the crow without her breakfast.

Be careful when someone flatters you—they might just want something from you.
